Laylatul Qadr: The Night of Power, Mercy, and Eternal Reward
Among all the nights of the year, Laylatul Qadr (ليلة القدر) holds a status unmatched in virtue, reward, and divine mercy. It is the night that Allah Himself described as better than a thousand months, making it the most precious opportunity for believers to seek forgiveness, blessings, and nearness to Him.
For Muslims around the world—and especially students and seekers of the Qur’an—Laylatul Qadr represents the pinnacle of Ramadan: a night where destinies are written, sins are forgiven, and hearts are transformed.
What Is Laylatul Qadr?
Laylatul Qadr literally means “The Night of Decree” or “The Night of Power.” It is the night during which Allah revealed the Qur’an to humanity as guidance, light, and mercy.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, We sent it (the Qur’an) down during the Night of Decree.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:1)
This single verse alone establishes Laylatul Qadr as a turning point in human history.
Why Laylatul Qadr Is Better Than a Thousand Months
Allah further declares:
“Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:3)
A thousand months equals over 83 years of worship. Any act of worship performed on this night—prayer, Qur’an recitation, dhikr, or charity—carries rewards greater than a lifetime of devotion.
This is not symbolic; it is a literal multiplication of reward, granted by Allah’s infinite mercy.
The Descent of Angels on Laylatul Qadr
One of the most awe-inspiring aspects of Laylatul Qadr is the descent of angels:
“The angels and the Spirit (Jibreel) descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:4)
The presence of Angel Jibreel (AS) signifies the immense importance of this night. Angels fill the earth, spreading peace, mercy, and divine decrees until dawn.
Peace Until the Break of Dawn
Allah describes the atmosphere of this night as pure tranquility:
“Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:5)
It is a night free from evil, full of serenity, acceptance of du‘a, and spiritual calm—an experience felt deeply by sincere worshippers.
When Is Laylatul Qadr?
The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is hidden by Allah’s wisdom, encouraging believers to seek it earnestly.
The Prophet ﷺ said in Sahih al-Bukhari:
“Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.”
(Bukhari)
Most scholars agree it falls on one of the odd nights: 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th of Ramadan, with strong emphasis on the 27th night—though certainty belongs only to Allah.
The Greatest Gift of Laylatul Qadr: Forgiveness
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever stands (in prayer) on Laylatul Qadr with faith and seeking reward, all of his previous sins will be forgiven.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
This makes Laylatul Qadr a night of spiritual rebirth, where a believer can begin anew—cleansed and forgiven.
The Best Du‘a for Laylatul Qadr
Aishah (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ what du‘a to make if she found Laylatul Qadr. He replied:
“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni.”
“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”
(Tirmidhi)
This du‘a captures the essence of the night: humility, repentance, and hope.

Laylatul Qadr and the Qur’an
The Qur’an was not revealed randomly—it was revealed on the greatest night to the best of creation for the guidance of humanity.
Allah says:
“The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185)
This is why dedicating Laylatul Qadr to learning and supporting Qur’an education is among the most powerful forms of worship.
